A continuation of
I never give myself a break.
I never get enough sleep.
In college I regularly went on 2-4 hours of sleep all week long, cramming my days and nights full of extra classes, studying, starting a business, leading and volunteering in ministries.
As a working dad of six kids, responsibilities are different, but my pattern has been the same. Work work work, and only rest enough to work more.
I get up early, rotate laundry, go for a run, rotate laundry, get myself ready while my wife preps the kids then I do drop off, I clean out the car, do dishes, I work my job… After work is chores and dinner and dishes and more dishes and chores and family evening prayer and some cleaning up and then bed, late, ever night.
Well. Maybe now that I’ve broken my leg, this is the break I need to learn to lean into rest. To learn how to value from things other than being productive with work and chores.
A few things I may do with my time:
- Reading with and to the kids.
- Reading and reading. I’m in the middle of a few books.
- Dad blogging… And after the last year, wow do I have a lot to write about.
- Sleeping. Seeing what it feels like to get enough sleep for once in my adult life.
Every Saturday I make bacon and pancakes and hash browns. Not for the next 6 weeks! This morning I handed my boys the America’s Test Kitchen cookbook for Young Chefs and asked if they’d like to try making the family breakfast.
Well done kids!
